PEORIA, Ill., October 28, 2024—Solitude: The Necessity of Art, the newest collaboration sponsored by Art Bridges, the foundation created by American art philanthropist Alice Walton, opens November 1 at Peoria Riverfront Museum with a press conference at 10 a.m.

Solitude: The Necessity of Art is the only exhibition to highlight nearly 175 years of American art that examines the ideas and perspectives of solitude. The works in the exhibition explore inspirational themes of self-actualization and a search for a communal sense of belonging.

Solitude
features major selections from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Included are one of only 100 known paintings by Regionalist painter Grant Wood, a playfully interactive work by conceptual art giant John Baldessari, and the sobering 1918 work Return of the Useless by early 20th-century American realist George Bellows.

“In our exhibition, this profound grouping of work allows for inspirational solace and self-reflection as we pursue the purpose in our own individual stories. Ultimately, it is the creative voice and the transformational ability of art that provides paths to the meaning we seek,” said Bill Conger, chief curator of the Peoria Riverfront Museum.

The collaboration marks the museum’s eighth exhibition and 15th project with Art Bridges since 2019. The Peoria Riverfront Museum is the most active of the more than 250 museums and collecting institutions collaborating with Art Bridges.

An array of specially designed programming, designed to elicit the discovery of inner strength and individuality, accompanies the exhibition, beginning with the Bradley Chamber Players’ “Bizet, Beethoven: Bridges Between Art and Music,” on November 3 at 2 p.m. at the Peoria Riverfront Museum.

Solitude: The Necessity of Art is sponsored by Art Bridges Foundation with additional support from Bielfeldt Foundation, Visionary Society, Friends of Art, and Illinois Arts Council.

Generously lent by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art as part of Art Bridges’ Partner Loan Network.
