PEORIA, Ill. (21 Feb 2024) — The Peoria Riverfront Museum is honored to host Madam C.J. Walker biographer A’Lelia Bundles to discuss the relationship between her great-great-grandmother and Walker’s mentor, Peoria resident Annie Turnbo Malone, at Peoria Riverfront Museum, March 1 and 2. The events are free and open to the public as part of Art Bridges
Foundation’s Access for All program funding.
Bundles, an award-winning American journalist, author, and news producer, is nationally known for the 2001 biography of her great-great-grandmother, Madam C.J. Walker: “On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker,” which
became the inspiration for the Netflix Series “Self Made.”
For the first time, on March 1, 5:30-7:30 p.m., the descendants of Madam C.J. Walker and Annie Turnbo Malone, Bundles and Malone author and historian James Agbara Bryson, will be present to discuss the way that their relatives are remembered in media, literature, and on Netflix, at “Mentors, Rivals and Sisterfriends: Madam C.J. Walker and Annie Turnbo Malone.” The event at Peoria Riverfront Museum's Gilmore Auditorium will be followed by book signings by both authors.
Bundles will give a special presentation on the life of Madam C.J. Walker, on March 2, 2-3:30 p.m. at the Giant Screen Theater. There will be brief screenings from the Netflix Series “Self Made,” and the PBS documentary “Boss: The Black Experience in Business.” The event will be followed by a Q&A and book signing, with light appetizers provided.
Everley Davis, assistant curator and curator of
the museum’s exhibition “Life and Legacy of Annie Malone,” will lead each discussion.
“A’Lelia Bundles coming to our city, the home of Annie Malone, is a highly anticipated and historic event to uplift
the truth of history regarding the hair care industry and the relationship between two successful, Black entrepreneurs in the early twentieth century,” said Davis. “This is a unique opportunity where descendants of both hair care icons, Madam C.J. Walker and Annie Malone are in discussion about honoring the legacies of their respective ancestors.”
Generous support for this project is provided by Art Bridges.
Both events are free and open to the public. Those interested in attending are urged to register. Registration and more information about the events can be found at the museum's website, peoriariverfrontmusuem.org.
